Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder that causes widespread pain. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the age of twenty. The pain will be with me for the rest of my life and I will never experience a body of health again. Fibromyalgia creates a physical decline in my mental and physical health. I experience pain every single day. Most of the pain stems from my lower body; traveling from the knees into my hip and into my lower back. I have a hard time walking and my knees frequently buckle. I have a difficult time sleeping because I have to constantly shift and rock to relieve pain to fall asleep.
This piece is a navigation of pain. It's taking the private moments I hide from others and displays them. It mixed sculptural elements of a dying flower bed to point at the finality of this condition, and the depression that often accompanies chronic pain. The dead plants represent the damaged nervous system and their rupturing of the screen unveils pain. It brings pain from an internal existence into visible experience. The viewer is forced to experience the piece in two different levels. The screen is damaged by the realm below and the video responds to this by tossing and turning. As the viewer interacts with the piece the form hides itself, shifting self consciously away.
