I am a fish, I hunt myself, I am a river, I feel turmoil, I am a body, I feel peace

This work was created for the (em)body exhibition at the Uptown Arts Center in Chicago. Self Portrait of an Angler consists of four cyanotypes on cotton fabric with text (above) embedded on the backs. Stripped bass are filleted on plastic, covering photosensitive fabric, and then exposed to sunlight to capture the image. The cloth is then washed, dried, and text is added to the backs. Fishing is an ancient labor that allows the body to survive through nourishment. The fish becomes a part of that body and drives that body forward. This work is a meditation of the body as tool or medium of labor ( fishing ), and the internal vs. external physical and emotional connection to that labor. If the fish is a metaphor for my own body then I destroy and create myself and the experiences that affect my own body.
